Top 10 ideas so far for Global Week of Action events

Many campaigns and networks are already discussing the kind of actions they will take during the Global Week of Action. 10 of the most popular examples are below.

  1. Miss-a-meal / fast. To fast for a meal or a day, in solidarity with the 850 million people who go to bed hungry every night. To show that trade is about food, is about life and death, is about livelihoods. To show that we are not just talking business and economics. Get religious leaders and others to do the same. Campaigns are talking about Monday 11 April.
  2. Vote for Trade Justice. To have a local, regional or national vote for trade justice. Ask politicians, farmers, high profile personalities, religious leaders and others to vote, as a campaign action, and as a way of educating people about the impact if unfair trade rules. Planned in Bangladesh and the UK.
  3. Grain march. To organise a march or a demonstration, but with a difference. Everyone comes with a handful of grain. This is left outside a trade ministry, the parliament, IMF or World Bank office etc or made into a sculpture. Same message as missing a meal.
  4. Funeral procession. Carry coffins full of rice, coffee etc to parliament, the trade ministry, IMF / World Bank offices etc to show that trade is a killer…killing communities, livelihoods, and ultimately men, women and children. Planned for Brussels.
  5. Pots and pans. As in hunger protests in Latin America, many campaigns are keen to make the Week of Action as noisy as possible by bringing pots and pans on the marches.
  6. Church service. Holding a church service on Sunday 10th April, using the Worship Guide written by the Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance. Why not try and hold a service in cathedrals across the country? Planned in many different countries.
  7. Rallies. Nothing inspires activists like coming together in their thousands for a demonstration. Rallies are planned in every state in India, as well as in Bangladesh, Germany, Italy and elsewhere. The largest ever night protest is planned for the UK, to ‘wake up the government’
  8. Unfair football match. Pitch unequal teams against each other and rig the rules of the game to demonstrate the injustice of international trade. Can be done with almost any sport. Planned in Germany.
  9. Cultural events. Concerts, theatre performances, street processions. Events to entertain and to educate. Planned in Senegal and Bolivia.
  10. Signature or postcard campaign. Get as many people as possible to sign their name to the fact that they want to see a change in international trade rules. Planned across India.
