10 more event ideas for the Global Week of Action
There are an enormous number of diverse events happening across the world for the Global Week of Action. Below is a selection of 10 that are planned.
- Send chickens to Parliament . The Ghanaian campaign is sending a live chicken to each member of parliament to highlight the enforced liberalisation of the poultry sector in Ghana and the continuing harmful effects of EU dumping.
- Night protest to wake up the government . The UK campaign is planning the largest ever night protest, with a constant vigil, music, debates etc, ending with a morning protest to ‘wake up the government.’
- Farmers’ tour . Take a group of farmers on tour, hearing their testimonies about the harmful effects of international trade. Planned for Kenya and the USA.
- A million-signature petition . The Zambian cotton campaign is aiming to collect 1 million signatures by April 2005 calling for change in the global trade in cotton. It will be sent to the President of Zambia, the WTO and the US government.
- Parliamentary display . Find out if you can display campaign materials in your national parliament to highlight unfair trade and educate politicians at the same time. Planned for the European Parliament when they meet in Strasbourg.
- Trade tribunal. Free Trade on trial. Put together a panel of experts to investigate the impact of free trade and privatisation. The tribunal could hear evidence from farmers, traders, officials and others and then issue a verdict.
- Letter-writing campaign . Send as many letters as possible to key decision-makers on trade. Planned for the US, Ireland and Brazil
- Mass lobby of parliament. Get as many campaigners as possible to organise face to face meetings on the same day with their parliamentary representatives. Planned in Norway and the Netherlands.
- Target G8 embassies . Send letters, form a human chain or meet the ambassador of one of the G8 countries. Lobby those countries who are doing most to force free trade on the poorest.
- Themed days , according to the five demands in the call to action.
Monday - food, Tuesday - livelihoods, Wednesday - water, Thursday - health, Friday – education. Planned for the UK.
